I’ve been hearing murmurs about this trend for a while and this week’s Look magazine just confirmed it that Stirrup Trousers are back this Autumn and I’m not sure how I feel about it.
But Look aren’t the only ones talking about it. Vogue has been talking about them since back in March and I have to agree with Beauty Director Catherine Piercy’s comment:
“I can’t imagine anything that could make me look more like an inverted triangle. I would literally rather wear a burlap sack.”
While other’s are going crazy for the trend with Allyson Payer writing for Who What Wear about the stripprups with leggins trend:
“Who knew that stirrup jeggings could be so cool?”
Not me. And let’s just take a moment to clarify the definition of “cool” please because I don’t care who’s wearing them or how awesome that person is, I don’t think I can ever bring myself to call this cool:
I don’t know. Maybe it’s just my vague memories of seeing my mum wear them a lot when I was growing up that means I just can’t ever imagine wanting to wear them myself. Sorry mum!
Going back to the Vogue article, I cannot overstate how much I relate to this comment:
“One editor said she “cried tears of joy” when her mom said goodbye to stirrups in favor of boot-cut jeans in the ’90s”
For me, they just look outdated and not in a cool retro way but in an ‘I’m going to see photos in 10 years and think what the hell was I thinking?’ kind of way.
Don’t get me wrong, in writing for Look, Maxine Eggenberger states a great point about their practicality (particularly with boots) and that is super-important to me but if they don’t have the comfort and style as well then are they really worth it?
The Verdict: Definitely Ugly, Hopefully a Fad.
All I can say is that I hope this trend doesn’t last long. I can’t see stirrup trousers / leggings ever becoming a staple in the average woman’s wardrobe but who knows? Maybe people will surprise me.
On this occassion, all I can think is how ugly they are. The ugly definitely outweighs the good (i.e. they can be practical with boots… maybe… in some cases), so for me, they definitely will not be a trend I’ll be trying this Autumn.
