Testing 6 Lip Colours with 1 Makeup Look

One of the things I always struggle with when it comes to makeup is figuring out which lip colour I need…

I’m getting better with things like my eye makeup, my face and figuring out what colours work for my skin tone and the clothes I’m wearing. But then it comes to the lips and I’m always worried I’ll completely ruin the whole look by picking the wrong colour.

So, today I decided to try a little experiment and look at a couple of different lip colours and figure out how much they change how the rest of my makeup looks.

No Lip Colour

Before we start anything, here’s the rest of today’s makeup: I went for black eyeliner with a gold outline, peach blush and a little contouring on the cheeks.

I quite like this look because it definitely makes my eyes look brighter and larger and the cheeks have a pretty healthy glow.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick: Black Cherry

The first lip colour I tried was one that I really like but don’t wear too often because it’s very bold and you don’t get the most even coverage so I find it tends to fade quite quickly.

This colour definitely made my skin look paler than usual and I thought it looked really nice with my hair colour. However, while making my skin look paler, I thought it also made my contour and blush look too dark and took too much attention away from the eyes.

Overall, not bad but not my favourite look.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick – Magnetic Coral

I wasn’t hugely sure about this colour when I first bought it but I wanted to try it out and I really like it, but, again, it’s a pretty bright colour so I don’t always feel confident enough to wear it often.

I was really surprised by how much I loved this colour lipstick with the rest of this makeup!

It worked really well with this colour of blush and while it is a nice, bright colour, it didn’t detract from the eyes too much. Overall it felt like a really pretty, youthful look!

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor – Passion

I really love this make and colour; it lasts such a long time, it’s matte but not too matte so it doesn’t dry out your lips, and I just think it’s a really flattering colour. That said, it’s not so forgiving if you smudge it or accidentally apply it in the wrong place.

I liked this a lot more than the Black Cherry colour but still felt it was a bit too dark; it made my skin look a little too pale and the blush / contour a little too dark, while detracting from the eyes too much.

Overall, not too bad. I’d probably wear this look but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick – Eva’s Pure Red

This is my favourite red lipstick and is my go-to colour to match with a smokey eye on a night out.

It definitely looks better on me in the summer when I’m at my most tanned, but for now it’s not too bad.

This is definitely my favourite of all the red-toned and darker lip colours; it definitely goes with the gold colour on the eyes and my skin tone but I’m not the biggest fan of how it looks with the peach blush – it feels like they clash a little.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick – Pure Gold Obsession

This is normally a lipstick that I wear as a top coat over other colours but for today, I figured I’d wear it on it’s own just for the sake of this test.

On it’s own it doesn’t have the best coverage but it is glittery which is why it’s incredible.

The sparkle is definitely nice and looks pretty good with the gold on the eyes, but I think it’s just a bit too yellow for this look. It washes out the whole look and I’m just not really a fan of it.

Perhaps if I applied another coat and went even bolder with the eyes maybe it would be a cool costume look, but for everyday wear I’m not a huge fan of how this looks with the rest of the makeup.

Max Factor Lipfinity Lipstick – Always Delicate

I love this lip gloss and I wear it a lot; it last a really long time and is a really easy-to-wear colour.

I do love this colour and it definitely doesn’t detract from the eyes. I think it goes really well with the blush and looks really natural but, to be honest, I think it is a little pale for the rest of this look. I like this, but it’s not my favourite…

My Favourites…

Overall, I think the coral lip colour is my favourite which was a bit of a surprise to me because it’s not at all what would have been my first choice before trying them on.

I’d rank the rest as follows:

  1. Magnetic Coral
  2. Eva’s Pure Red
  3. Always Delicate
  4. Passion
  5. Black Cherry
  6. Pure Gold Obsession

Which look was your favourite?
